Jakarta, TMBANG, – Member countries of the European Union and the European Union Parliament have taken bold steps. They agreed to gradually stop importing gas from Russia. This is a bold step after for almost 50 years, European countries have imported gas from Russia for their energy needs.
Executive Director International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol praised the agreement taken. Fatih himself took part in the press conference with European Commission President Ursula von Leyen and Energy and Housing Commissioner Dan Jørgensen. The press conference explained the importance of the European Union’s new agreement to stop natural gas imports from Russia by 2027.
Birol sees this agreement as a historic moment that marks the end of an era that began more than 50 years ago when gas imports first occurred. He also said that Europe was now in a much stronger position, having ended its decades-long dependence on Russian gas by diversifying into other gas suppliers and energy sources.
“In the world of energy, excessive dependence can quickly turn into major geopolitical vulnerabilities,” explained Birol.
He reiterated, “My number one golden rule for energy security is diversification.”
For your information, after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the IEA formulated 10 Points as steps to reduce the European Union’s dependence on Russian gas. The IEA’s rapid response to the escalating energy crisis was published one week after the invasion.
“We have also worked closely with President von der Leyen and the European Commission on plans to ensure the energy security of Europe and Ukraine in recent years,” said Birol.
