Officially Operating the Nubi AOI Side Project, PHM Oil and Gas Production Increases

Date:

Jakarta, TAMBANG,- Towards the end of 2025, PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) released positive news. PHM officially does it onstream Sisi Nubi Project Area of Interest 1-3-5 (Sisi Nubi AOI), a PHM strategic project to increase the Company’s oil and gas production to support national energy availability and security. The success of the AOI Side Nubi Project is marked by onstream The first well is SS-401 on the WPS4 Platform on December 4 2025 at 12:23 WITA with production of 2.4 MMscfd (Adj Choke 24/64”). Ramp up well to choke 42/64″ on 5 December 2025 at 09.10 WITA with production reaching 10 MMscfd. Based on the project plan, on 6 December 2025 the SS-406 well will be opened on the same platform so that on 8 December 2025 production from both wells is targeted to reach 20 MMscfd.

AOI’s Sisi Nubi project includes the construction of six new platforms (bridges), three extensions decks in existing facilities, as well as six subsea pipeline segments 22 kilometers long with a sea depth of around 60-80 meters. This development connects the new platform with existing facilities, as well as 36 development wells that will be carried out on these 6 platforms.

PHM General Manager, Setyo Sapto Edi explained that it was a success onstream This project is a form of PHM’s commitment to continue to support the sustainability of oil and gas production from the Mahakam Working Area (WK) which plays an important role in providing energy for Indonesia’s future. Setyo also revealed that this achievement was the result of the collaboration of all PHM workers and work partners.

“We collaborate with all stakeholders, including the Directorate General of Oil and Gas, SKK Migas and partner companies to apply innovation and technology in managing the Company’s upstream oil and gas operations and business activities,” he said.

Setyo emphasized the Company’s commitment to implementing innovation and technology in this project in line with the policies of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) as the holding company and PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) as Pertamina’s upstream subholding. “We believe that the application of innovation and technology is a strategic step for the Company to halt the rate of decline in production, increase the recovery rate, maintain production levels, and halt the rate of decline in natural production in mature oil and gas fields in the Kalimantan region,” he explained.

The Sisi Nubi AOI project is an example of the application of technological innovation both in terms of subsurface, surface facilities, drilling operations and well intervention. Determining the subsurface target in this project uses a methodology seismic driven targets based on machine learning. This methodology has successfully unlocked the potential to obtain results above expectations through the drilling of two wells at the Sisi Nubi AOI project. Likewise in surface technology, the Sisi Nubi AOI Project was developed using Suction Pile Foundation (SPF), which is a new breakthrough that was first implemented in Indonesia, which allows the installation of underwater structures more quickly, efficiently and environmentally friendly.

In this project, drilling of wells applies the New Concept-Sacrificial Casing method, namely the latest partition system which is proven to increase operational reliability while speeding up the duration of work. As a result, the SS-406 well managed to record the fastest and safest drilling rate (Rate of Penetration) in PHM. The drilling of the SS-406 well was also the first well in Indonesia to implement pressure tests and fluid analysis directly using a drill string. Apart from that, the well completion work also showed significant progress, including the successful installation of completion equipment with single-trip-multi-zones gravel pack sand control technology and multi-zone packer isolation with tubular sizes of 9-5/8″ and 7″. This technology aims to control sand production, isolate several reservoir zones for selective production and prepare for future applications of thru tubing screens, so as to optimize production.

Setyo added that success onstream This development well on the Sisi Nubi AOI Platform WPS4 Project is the beginning of the next series of production, where currently the Sisi Nubi AOI project is continuing at the drilling stage development by using two Jack-Up Rigs operating on two different platforms. “I am optimistic that the success of the Sisi Nubi AOI Project can be a reference for other upstream oil and gas projects. I believe that strong collaboration, integrity and high enthusiasm can provide the best results,” concluded Setyo.

During a visit two days earlier to PHM, PHE President Director, Awang Lazuardi explained that PHE, as Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding, would continue to invest in managing upstream oil and gas operations and businesses according to the principles Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). “Most of the national oil production comes from fields mature which we manage in various regions of Indonesia, such as in WK Mahakam. The main challenge is how to maintain production levels amidst conditions reservoir which is decreasing naturally,” he said.

Awang also revealed that innovation and technology are one of the pillars in successful field management mature. According to him, the human factor remains the key. “The success of the strategy and implementation of upstream oil and gas investment projects is very dependent on the competence of personnel in the field. We continue to develop the capabilities of workers, both senior and new generation, so that they are adaptive, innovative and able to respond to industry challenges,” he explained.

Meanwhile, PHI President Director, Sunaryanto said that PHI and its subsidiaries are committed to implementing sustainable practices. engineering the best in the national and global upstream oil and gas industry in building and developing the Company’s oil and gas operations and production facilities. “The Sisi Nubi AOI project is not just about building facilities offshorebut also about the enthusiasm to continue moving forward amidst increasingly high operational and business challenges. With an average design capacity of 20-25 MMSCFD “per platform, the Sisi Nubi AOI project can increase PHM gas and condensate production which will contribute to national energy availability and security,” said Sunaryanto.

A series milestones important successes achieved throughout the course of this project. Starting with the inauguration of the First Iron Cut (first cut of steel) which is carried out in yards owned by PT Meindo Elang Indah in Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands on January 15 2024. After that, in November – December 2024 a sail away of six Jackets was carried out followed by installation Jackets in offshore in December 2024 – January 2025. In January-February 2025, the installation of the pipeline, riser and subsea spool will be carried out. Then April 28, 2025, it will be carried out sail away topside platforms WPS4 and WPS5, to follow sail away topside WPN7 and WPN8 on May 6, 2025, on May 16, 2025, carried out sail away topside WPN5 and WPN6.

Offshore work continues with installation topside platforms in offshore which took place safely and securely in the period May to June 2025. This series of activities continued with drilling of the SS-401 and SS-406 wells in platforms WPS4 which will take place from 13 August to 5 November 2025.

Series of activities well connection, well interventionuntil start-up taking place in the period 5 November to 4 December 2025 for wells SS-401 and SS-406. In this phase, PHM utilizes new technology Coil Hose to remove fluid completion efficiently on a minimalist platform, as well Tractors And Stroker to carry out zone changes in wells with high deviation. Slim-up Production of the first two WPS-4 wells was carried out in stages while collecting data and observing well parameters.

Involving more than 2,800 workers and SIMOPS activities makes the Sisi Nubi AOI Project a project with high complexity. However, all stages of the project from the beginning of 2024 until onstream can run safely with safety performance reaching more than 9 million working hours without Lost Time Injury (LTI). This achievement confirms PHM’s strong commitment to implementing HSSE consistently throughout its upstream oil and gas projects and operations activities.
