Jakarta, TAMBANG, – Amid the increasing demand for oil and gas, it is hoped that domestic production will also increase. One hope then rests on PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE). As Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding, PHE emphasizes its commitment to continue to increase national oil and natural gas (oil and gas) production. Apart from developing a low carbon energy business amidst the challenges of the global energy industry.
For your information, PHE currently manages around 27% of oil and gas working areas in Indonesia and makes a significant contribution to national production. In 2025, PHE contributes around 65% of domestic oil lifting or around 396 thousand barrels per day (MBOPD) and 35% of domestic gas lifting of 1.8 billion cubic feet per day (BCFD).
PHE’s Director of Strategic Planning, Portfolio and Commercial, Edi Karyanto, explained that the company continues to encourage various strategic programs. This is done to maintain the sustainability of national oil and gas production amidst the challenges of geopolitical conditions and increasing operational complexity.
“Strengthening exploration, optimizing existing fields, developing and implementing technology to increase production will be key factors in maintaining the sustainability of national oil and gas production, as well as opening up new resource potential in various oil and gas basins in Indonesia,” he said at Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding Media Engagement activity in Jakarta, Tuesday (10/3/).
Throughout 2025, PHE’s oil and gas production is recorded at around 1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (MMBOEPD), with details of 557 MBOPD and 2.8 BCFD. Apart from maintaining production performance, PHE also recorded a number of strategic achievements, including the discovery of resources of up to 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BBOE) as well as the implementation of various production increasing technologies such as multistage fracturing, steam floodAnd chemical enhanced oil recovery (CEOR).
In 2026, PHE is preparing a number of programs to manage natural decline, increase national oil and gas production and resources. The program includes drilling 16 exploration wells and 800 exploitation wells. The company will also carry out workover activities for 1,284 jobs; In the survey field, the company is targeting a 2D seismic survey of 904 kilometers (km) and a 3D seismic survey of 1,660 square kilometers (km2). Then there are also activities well intervention well service (WIWS) reached 33,000 jobs.
The strategy to increase production is also carried out through the development of existing fields (brownfield) and the development of new fields (greenfield). The company is also starting to apply EOR technology to increase hydrocarbon recovery from fields that are already producing.
On the other hand, the company continues to strengthen exploration of new resources including the potential for non-conventional oil (MNK) and strategic cooperation opportunities through acquisitions.
PHE is implementing a Dual Growth Strategy, namely maximizing its core oil and gas business while developing a low-carbon energy business through carbon capture storage/carbon capture utilization and storage (CCS/CCUS) technology as well as various operational decarbonization programs. This step is in line with efforts to support the government’s target of increasing national oil and gas production while maintaining energy security during the transition to cleaner energy.
With these various strategic programs, PHE continues to strive to increase its contribution to national oil and gas production while strengthening Indonesia’s energy security.
PHE will continue to invest in managing upstream oil and gas operations and businesses in accordance with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles. PHE is also always committed to Zero Tolerance on Bribery by ensuring fraud prevention and ensuring the company is free from bribery.
