On February 1, Russia launched a drone strike attack on a bus transporting mine workers leaving a DTEK mine in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, a critical hub for Ukraine’s coal industry. The attack killed 12 people, injuring at least 16 others, making it the largest single loss of life of DTEK employees since Russia launched its full‑scale invasion in 2022. Within 24 hours of the first attack, Russian forces launched a second attack on DTEK’s mine in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, this time damaging administrative buildings.
DTEK, a prominent power company in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, has been the subject of several attacks by Russian forces, including four incidents in October 2025, and over 200 targeted strikes since the invasion began, according to DTEK.
“This strike is a targeted terrorist attack against civilians and another crime by Russia against critical infrastructure,” the company said in a statement. “DTEK expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and provides all necessary assistance to the victims of this tragedy and their families.”
