Bridging the World of Education and the Mining Industry – Mining Indonesia 2026

Date:

The Indonesian Mining Experts Association (PERHAPI) East Kalimantan Regional Representative (PD Kaltim) is holding the “PERHAPI Mengajar” program in 2025 as a form of real contribution to bridging the world of education with the mining industry.

This program, which is part of the CSR initiative, started on May 17 2025 and involves a number of educational institutions, including Mulawarman University, SMK Negeri 1 Balikpapan, and Kutai Kartanegara University.

Raden Agah Wahyu from PT Bukit Baiduri Energi (BBE), as the person in charge of field activities, expressed his impressions of the visit of students from SMK Negeri 1 Balikpapan to the PT BBE site on 17 May 2025.

“Examples of material such as blasting techniques can be seen directly by pupils and students in the field. They can see the drilling process, managing explosives warehouses, assembling for blasting, as well as other related work,” he said.

Agah hopes that activities like this can broaden students’ horizons regarding the application of the knowledge they have learned in class.

Asfianty Abas, Head of the Mining Geology Study Program at SMK Negeri 1 Balikpapan, explained that this visit was part of a collaborative program of industrial visits and field trips for mining and blasting subjects.

“With this visit, students will understand more directly how the mining industry works,” he said.

In the following week, Mulawarman University students made a field visit to PT Mahakam Sumber Jaya (MSJ) in Kutai Kartanegara Regency, on May 22 2025.

The Head of the Mining Engineering Study Program at Mulawarman University revealed that this excursion was intended for first year students to introduce the mining process, from the exploitation stage to loading onto barges.

“This activity was enthusiastically welcomed by students who actively asked questions about the coal processing process, such as techniques for reducing the size so that it is uniform and the coal mixing process according to buyers’ specifications,” he explained.

PT MSJ HSE Manager, Adi Azwarahman, stated that this activity provided two-way benefits.

“Visits to mining sites provide direct understanding of operations, technology and challenges of the mining industry. This can strengthen relationships between companies and educational institutions and support future recruitment and development of human resources,” explained Adi.

Chairman of PERHAPI PD Kaltim, Ahmad Helmy, emphasized that the “PERHAPI Mengajar” program will continue to be implemented so that collaboration between campuses and industry becomes closer.

“The hope is that this program can improve the quality of human resources in the mining sector, so that after graduating, pupils and students can immediately apply their knowledge in industry,” said Helmy.

PERHAPI PD Kaltim collaborates with partner companies such as PT Bukit Baiduri Energi (BBE), PT Mahakam Sumber Jaya (MSJ), and Multi Harapan Utama to facilitate the application of theories gained on campus through direct experience in the field.
